Habits for Athletes to Achieve Their Goals

If you’re an athlete, I’m sure you’re looking to build habits that can get you closer to your fitness goals. From finding ones’ purpose to practicing discipline, you must have heard motivational speakers talk about the best habit for athletes.

Being Ghana’s first skeleton Olympian myself, let me tell you what those habits are.

1. Focus on your strengths

It doesn’t matter which sport you play; you need strength to perform at your best. Your skill set may get you initial success, but eventually, you’ll need strength to sustain your performance.

However, focusing on strength doesn’t just mean lifting weights and building muscles. It also means working on your speed to get consistent results. This is why you see athletes above the age of 40 still being the best at their game.

2. Polish your skills

Not every athlete has god-gifted talents—but that shouldn’t hold them back. Skills can be honed—in fact, a majority of athletes work on improving their skills to succeed.

Polishing your skills doesn’t just mean practicing—it has to be done right and, preferably, with a mentor. A dedicated coach or mentor who knows the sport will be able to train you properly by helping you figure out your strengths, work on your weaknesses, and ultimately polish your game.

3. Stick to your diet

As an athlete, you must already be following a diet. Sticking to that diet, however, can be challenging. Building this habit is important because if you don’t, all the physical training goes in vain.

Since diets can be boring, you may frequently crave delicious foods. One way to tackle this is by setting a cheat day once a week or month, depending upon the intensity of your training. This will help reduce cravings. You should also set some fitness and diet goals to help you stay motivated. Another thing you can do is plan your weekly meals to curb your craving for unhealthy food.

Now that you know the most important habits for athletes, you can readjust your lifestyle to be more disciplined.

I am Akwasi Frimpiong, an Olympic-level athlete from Ghana who achieved his Olympic dream with these habits. If I can do it, you can as well.
