How to Unwind After a Tough Day’s Training

Keeping your energy level high after a tough day at training can be hard, considering the high-intensity training sessions athletes have to go through. Typically, athletes undergo strength training, mental training, and of course, skill training. These take up a major chunk of your day, and when you do get done with all the trainings, you may feel tired and not want to do anything else. Or, you may want to do many other things, but your body may not cooperate because of the post-training fatigue.

As an Olympic-level athlete from Ghana, I went through the same emotions. Here are some healthy unwinding tips I used

1. Turn to nature

This may sound like another exercise to you, as you have to go out and spend a few minutes outdoors, but trust me, it does wonders. Just sit under the sky and breathe. It will release that negative energy and allow your mind to focus on other things. You’ll get lost in the stars, trying to comprehend how beautiful this world is, and realize that you only have one life to enjoy all the beauty. The last thing you want to do is waste it on negativity!

Spending some time with nature is very good for your mental health. Start by doing this for 15 minutes each day, and you’ll soon start wanting to spend more time around nature.

2. Switch off your phone

Not using your mobile phone is a bitter pill to swallow because many of us turn to our phones to unwind. I’m not denying that this isn’t a good way to unwind, but it wastes a lot of time. You may plan to only spend 15 minutes scrolling through your newsfeed but may end up glued to your screen for an hour.

More importantly, you need to rest your eyes after the intense training sessions.  Mobile phones have strong rays, and turning to them after a training session will result in increased pressure on your eyes, which will eventually increase your stress level. Switch off your phone and do something that doesn’t induce stress.

3. Find a hobby

Another healthy unwinding tip is to find a hobby. You must have something to look forward to once you finish your training, such as cooking, socializing, painting, or anything else you enjoy.

Finding a hobby helps boost your energy because you finally get to do what you love.  You need this hobby to stay happy and stress-free and derive pleasure from something you enjoy. If you’re trying to find a new hobby, the trick is to keep trying different things until you finally find something that excites and motivates you.
