Ways You Can Overcome Negative Thoughts

A fear of failure can keep you from achieving your dreams. It’s more serious than you think—many with the potential of flying high miss out on golden opportunities because negative thoughts overshadow their self-confidence.

My experience as an athlete entrepreneur has taught me that one of the most difficult tasks you will face in life is to overcome negative thoughts. The process made me stronger and more resilient and had a big hand in making me Ghana’s first Skeleton Olympian. Here are some tips on how you can also overcome negative thoughts that hinder your journey to success.

1. Redefine Failure

When we think of failing, we usually catastrophize—exaggerate the worst-case scenario—and face severe anxiety as a result. But failure is not the end of the world. If it were, I’d never have been able to represent Ghana at the Olympics.

My attitude towards failure was a rather positive one. For me, each setback is a learning experience that teaches you how to move forward. I believe you, too, should change your perspective and accept failure as a lesson for the future.

2. Meditate

Learning to control your thoughts is an important skill to have in this day and age. Meditation helps unwind your thoughts and emotions so you can lift their weight off yourself and focus on what really matters.

To overcome negative thoughts, practice meditation to reach the core of what actually troubles you. Even as an athlete entrepreneur, I give equal importance to meditation to strike a balance in my own life. You should too.

3. Let It Out

Sometimes the best way to let go of your negative thoughts is to tell someone how you feel, whether it’s a professional or even a friend. Around 75% of individuals have felt better after therapy sessions. When you say them out loud, they usually don’t feel so scary anymore. Try it; you’ll see what I mean! Talking to someone you trust also gets you great advice sometimes.

You can even choose to write a journal or express yourself using other means such as art or sports—like I do—but keeping negative thoughts to yourself can get worse with time if you don’t let them out.

Overcoming your negative thoughts is not an easy task. Remember that you’re not alone; failure haunts all of us, but the key is to keep going and learning. This was my mantra whenever I’d feel low or demotivated, but then I went on to fulfill my Olympic dream.
