As I lace up my running shoes each morning, I’m reminded of the journey that has brought me here—a path filled with challenges, triumphs, and an unwavering commitment to inspire the next generation. My name is Akwasi Frimpong, and as Ghana’s first skeleton Olympian, I’ve experienced firsthand the transformative power of perseverance and hope. This journey has led my wife, Erica, and me to establish the Hope Of A Billion Foundation (HOAB) in 2022, aiming to encourage, engage, and empower a billion lives in underserved communities through sports, business, and educational opportunities.

A Promise That Fuels My Passion

The seed of my determination was planted during my childhood in Ghana. I made a promise to my Grandma Minka: “I will never give up.” This vow became the cornerstone of my athletic pursuits, propelling me from the tracks of Ghana to the icy runs of the Winter Olympics. Each stride I take is not just for personal glory but to embody the resilience and potential inherent in every young individual who dares to dream beyond their circumstances.

Transforming Setbacks into Stepping Stones

My journey has been anything but linear. From facing rejections to overcoming injuries, each setback was a lesson in resilience. In 2020, I became the first skeleton athlete from Africa to win an elite skeleton race sanctioned by the USA Bobsled and Skeleton Federation in Park City, Utah. This victory wasn’t just a personal milestone; it was a testament to what determination and support can achieve. It’s this spirit that HOAB seeks to instill in young minds: that obstacles are not roadblocks but detours to greater paths.

Empowering Through HOAB Initiatives

At HOAB, we believe that exposure and opportunity are catalysts for change. One of our flagship programs involves sharing my story through films and comic books, reaching over 600 young people in South Africa and Ghana. By introducing them to the world of winter sports—a realm previously unimaginable—we challenge them to expand their horizons and redefine their possibilities. Our recent partnership with On’s social impact program, Right To Run, amplifies this mission, reinforcing the belief that everyone has the right to move freely and pursue their passions.

The Ripple Effect of Mentorship

Mentorship has been a cornerstone of my development, and I strive to pay it forward. Engaging with youth through workshops and personal interactions, I share not just my successes but the myriad failures that paved the way. By demystifying the path to achievement, we equip the next generation with realistic expectations and the tools to navigate their journeys. It’s about creating a support system where dreams are nurtured, and potential is realized.
