As a child growing up in Ghana, my journey to becoming an Olympian and entrepreneur was deeply influenced by the presence of powerful role models. I have always believed that children learn best not through words but through the lives we lead. It’s one of the reasons why I founded Hope Of A Billion. When children see someone who inspires them, they begin to see the possibilities for their own lives.

A positive role model for children can spark ambition, shape values, and guide behaviors. In this guide, I want to share why role models matter and how we can all strive to be the kind of people who leave lasting, empowering impressions on young minds.

The Power of Representation

Children need to see themselves in their heroes. It’s not just about having a shared background or cultural identity; it’s about seeing a real, tangible example of what they can become.

When I competed in the Winter Olympics as Ghana’s first skeleton athlete, I wasn’t just chasing a medal—I was showing children from my homeland and across the world that their aspirations were limitless. When children see someone who has walked a path similar to theirs, they internalize the message that they, too, can achieve greatness. This power of representation is why we must celebrate diversity in every field and foster environments where every child can see someone who inspires them.

Teaching Values Through Actions

Children watch everything we do. They mimic our behaviors, absorb our attitudes, and adopt our values—whether we realize it or not. Positive role models for children go beyond inspiring ambition; they instill integrity, perseverance, and kindness. For me, my journey in sports has always been about more than winning. It’s about demonstrating hard work, resilience, and the importance of facing failure with grace.

Every time I speak to young people, I remember that my actions speak louder than any words I could offer. If I want children to persevere, I must show them what it looks like to never give up, even when the odds seem insurmountable.

Nurturing Ambition Through Encouragement

Positive role models for children do more than inspire; they actively support and encourage. They help children envision a future that feels real and attainable. They guide them through challenges, providing wisdom and perspective that only experience can offer.

I remember vividly the people who pushed me to dream bigger. Their belief in my potential helped me develop confidence in my abilities. They didn’t just tell me I could succeed—they equipped me with the tools and mindset to do so. As role models, we must not only lead by example but also actively engage with the children who look up to us.

I’ve seen how a single spark can ignite a fire within a child. It’s the same fire that helped me become Africa’s first black male skeleton athlete. Through Hope Of A Billion, we want to provide role models to children and empower young minds to inspire them to reach their full potential.
