Back-to-school season always makes me think about more than backpacks, notebooks, and new shoes. It reminds me that every child deserves the chance to discover what they can become. For me, that means creating opportunities for children from underserved communities that reach far beyond the classroom.
Opportunity Has to Go Beyond School Supplies
School supplies matter, but they only address one part of a child’s journey. A notebook can help a student learn, but access to a mentor can help that student imagine a future. A sports program can build confidence. Meeting someone who has overcome obstacles can help a child develop resilience and believe that their own circumstances do not have to define their future.
I know this personally. As a skeleton athlete, I learned that having a dream means little if you never get a chance to pursue it. The people who encouraged me, taught me, and opened doors along the way helped me see possibilities I could not always see for myself. That is why opportunities for children from underserved communities must include experiences that help them learn, lead, explore, and dream bigger.
Businesses and Communities Can Open Doors
Businesses can play a meaningful role without turning every effort into a donation of supplies. They can invite students to see how different careers work, provide mentorship, sponsor sports and arts programs, or give young people opportunities to solve real problems. Communities can connect children with coaches, entrepreneurs, educators, artists, and other people who can expand their understanding of what is possible.
These experiences matter because children need exposure to possibilities. When we create opportunities for children from underserved communities, we give them more than resources. We give them examples, relationships, confidence, and reasons to keep pushing forward.
We All Have Something to Give

Back-to-school season gives us a natural moment to ask a bigger question: What can I do to create opportunities for children from underserved communities? Sometimes the answer is money. Sometimes it is time, knowledge, mentorship, or simply telling a young person, “I believe in you.” Those small acts can become the beginning of something much bigger.
As Ghana’s First Skeleton Athlete, I know how powerful it can be when someone believes in your potential and gives you a chance. Now, I want to help create that chance for more children.
I founded Hope Of A Billion with my wife to create meaningful opportunities for children from underserved communities, helping young people around the world recognize their potential, build confidence, and grow into future leaders through our programs.
