I have spent much of my life chasing big goals. Competing as an Olympic skeleton athlete taught me how powerful determination can be. But through my work with uplifting underserved children, I have learned that real transformation often begins with something much smaller. A single encouraging moment can change how a child sees themselves. When a child feels supported, even briefly, it can spark confidence, joy, and dreams that last for years.
The Power of One Encouraging Moment
When I visit communities with limited resources, I meet children who carry incredible potential but rarely hear that their ideas matter. Many of them have never had someone stop, listen, and encourage them to try.
I remember a quiet boy who joined one of our programs and stayed in the background during every activity. A mentor gently invited him to share his thoughts during a group exercise. At first, he hesitated. Then he spoke. The room listened. That simple moment made a difference. Soon, he was helping other students speak up, too.
This is what uplifting underserved children often looks like. It is not always about grand programs or expensive resources. Sometimes it begins with one moment where a child feels noticed and valued.
When Children Start Believing in Themselves
My own journey reminds me why these moments matter. Growing up in Ghana, I faced challenges and limited opportunities. I never imagined that one day I would compete internationally as a skeleton athlete. What changed my path was the encouragement I received along the way. When people believed in me, it helped me believe in myself.
I see that same transformation happen with the children in our programs. One girl joined us because she loved science but felt it was only for students in wealthy schools. A mentor helped her build a simple experiment using everyday materials. Her excitement was impossible to miss. Later, she told us it was the first time she felt like a real scientist.
Moments like that are why uplifting underserved children matters so deeply. Children often do not lack talent or ambition. They simply need someone to help them see what is possible.
Small Actions That Create Big Ripples
People sometimes assume helping children requires massive resources. In reality, meaningful change often starts with simple actions. Listening. Encouraging curiosity. Showing a child that their dream is worth pursuing.
One student once told me he wanted to become an athlete after hearing my story as a skeleton athlete. He had never seen someone from a background like his compete on a global stage. With guidance from our team, he joined a local sports club. Today, he trains regularly and talks about representing his country someday.
That is the beauty of uplifting underserved children. One small moment of belief can grow into something far greater than we ever expect.

As a skeleton athlete, I have been fortunate to compete on the world stage. But one of the greatest missions of my life is uplifting underserved children through the work we do at Hope Of A Billion. I founded this organization to help kids from underserved communities discover their potential and grow into future leaders who can make a difference across the globe.
Our work has even been featured on the Olympics’ official Instagram page alongside legends like Magic Johnson.
