When I look back at my own journey, I realize that every breakthrough in my life came when I was willing to leave what felt safe. Becoming a skeleton athlete from Ghana wasn’t easy. I had to face fear, doubt, and the possibility of failure. But those uncomfortable moments pushed me to grow, and I see the same power when I work with kids from underserved communities through Hope Of A Billion.
The Comfort Zone Trap
For many young people, especially kids from underserved communities, the comfort zone feels like the only place that’s safe. It’s predictable, and predictability can feel like survival. But it also keeps them from discovering what they’re capable of. When I sit with students who think their dreams are too big, I see the same fear I once carried. They’re afraid of trying something new and falling short. The truth is, stepping out of that comfort zone is the only way transformation begins.
Lessons From the Track
On the ice track, I learned how growth is tied to risk. Every run of a skeleton athlete could end in a crash, but every run also gave me more confidence. I remind students that the same principle applies in life. Whether it’s speaking up in class, trying out for a team, or daring to dream about college, those steps into the unknown build resilience. When we help kids from underserved communities take that first step, we free something inside them that no one can take away.
The Power of a Single Day Workshop
At Hope Of A Billion, we created the one-day Power of Resilience Workshop designed to give students a safe space to test themselves, take risks, and realize they can handle more than they think. I’ve seen the shift happen in real time. A student who was too shy to raise their hand in the morning will be leading their peers by the afternoon. When they see they can succeed outside their comfort zone, their world opens up.

As the first Black male skeleton athlete from Africa to participate in the Olympics, I know what it feels like to be underestimated. That’s why we founded Hope Of A Billion—to help kids from underserved communities realize their true potential and grow into future leaders across the globe through our programs. Every time I see a student find their courage, I’m reminded that stepping out of your comfort zone changes everything. If you believe in this vision, I invite you to stand with us.
We’re humbled to see our mission honored on the Olympics’ official Instagram page, featured alongside icons like Simone Biles, Usain Bolt, and Magic Johnson.
Donate now and help us continue giving hope, purpose, and opportunities to the next generation of dreamers. Together, we can empower these kids to write their own stories of resilience, from a scientist who changes the world to an Olympic skeleton athlete racing headfirst into the unknown.
