When I look back on my journey as a skeleton athlete from Ghana, an entrepreneur, and a dreamer, one lesson stands out above everything else. The relationships I’ve built along the way have been more valuable than any medal, paycheck, or opportunity. For me, building strong networks hasn’t been about collecting contacts or handing out business cards. It has been about genuine connections, trust, and people who believe in me even when I stumble.

Connections That Open Doors

I wasn’t born into a life of easy access. Moving from Ghana to the Netherlands and pursuing sports meant I had to start fresh in every environment. What carried me forward was meeting people who saw more in me than just my circumstances. Coaches, teammates, mentors, and friends introduced me to possibilities I would never have found on my own.

Because of them, I became the first skeleton athlete from Ghana to compete in the Winter Olympics. It wasn’t just my training that made that possible. It was the coach who opened his track to me when I couldn’t afford it. It was the sponsor who believed in my story and took a chance on me. It was the mentor who gave me advice that saved me from quitting. Every door I’ve walked through has had someone standing on the other side, willing to open it.

How Networks Fuel Business and Life

In business, I’ve seen that building strong networks makes the difference between chasing opportunities and being invited into them. When people trust your character and effort, they remember you. They want to work with you. They recommend you when you’re not in the room.

Life works the same way. None of us can do this alone. Whether it’s finding guidance, sharing ideas, or just leaning on someone during tough times, the people around us shape who we become. The right network doesn’t just move you forward. It holds you up when you’re tired and reminds you why you started in the first place.

How You Can Start

You don’t need to be an Olympian or a business leader to begin. Start with what’s right in front of you. Build strong networks rooted in honesty and care. Listen more than you talk. Offer help without expecting something in return. Over time, those small choices grow into a foundation of trust that will carry you further than you can imagine.

As Ghana’s first skeleton Olympian and an entrepreneur, I’ve built my career on the power of connection. I believe in helping others achieve their goals and build strong networks. That’s why I share my experiences with fellow entrepreneurs and ambitious people.

I am also the founder of Hope Of A Billion, a foundation dedicated to empowering kids from underserved communities worldwide to become future leaders, entrepreneurs, and Olympic skeleton athletes. Our work has been recognized and featured on the official Olympics Instagram page right alongside legends like Magic Johnson and Billie Jean King.
